More on the Morning News Tournament

The Morning News Tournament of Books is starting on March 9th. Here are the judges and an explanation and all that good stuff.

If you download the PDF of the brackets for the competition, you'll see Disreputable History is up in the first round against Shadow Country, winner of the National Book Award. So um... yeah.
SC is a favorite with a ranking of 1 -- while DHOFLB is a dark horse at 4.  It's also the only YA novel in the competition.
But still!
Fun.

You can comment as the tournament progresses, you can buy T-shirts, and all the books are discounted at Powells.

P.S. The judges include Amanda Hesser and John Hodgman and Junot Diaz and other extremely cool writers.

Nerissa!

Nerissa!  Wherever you are, you won the contest (together with Dee), so email me at elockhart @ earthlink.net and read the blog post lower down for more info.

Barbie. What do you think?

This, from my friend Tanya Lee Stone.  You KNOW you have Barbie stories. You must.

Send them to her!

My next tween/teen book is a history of the Barbie doll and its impact on girl culture. As part of that project, I'm inviting kids to send me their stories. All the deets are on this link on my website.

The Teen Literature Festival

David Levithan   of Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and a gazillion other books is organizing the first-ever Teen Literature Festival this March. SO EXCITING.

Here is the schedule. Come to NY and get your teen lit freak on!  The only thing I will be doing is the ginormous signing at Books of Wonder, but I hope to attend lots of things as an audience member!

Juvenalia Smackdown

I Have Seen the Future…and It Sounds Like This

Wednesday, 3/18, Mulberry Street Branch of the NYPL (address)

Teen authors are notoriously stingy about reading from their works-in-progress.  But for Guest of Honor Joe Monti, authors Libba Bray, Rachel Cohn, Eireann Corrigan, Justine Larbalestier, and Scott Westerfeld are willing to share a little bit from their future books.  Hosted by David Levithan.

Thursday, 3/19, 6pm at Books of Wonder

By day, Libba Bray, Daniel Ehrenhaft, Barney Miller, and Natalie Standiford are upstanding authors.  But by night, they turn into … TIGER BEAT, the first ever YA author rock band.  Tonight is their debut public performance … and it’s sure to go down in legend.

With opening act The Infinite Playlists (Rachel Cohn and David Levithan reading a litany of musical references, but mercifully not singing).

Contest Winners!

Stories of deep embarassment.
LOL monkeys and cats. A strange Japanese game show.
Hugh Laurie and Hank Green, both at their finest.
Donut demise. Knock knock jokes. People eating food off the floor. Lessons on how to be Ninja and how to be Nerd!
Hamsters in helmets.
Many Twlight spoofs. (Funny but um....dare I say, not a difficult target?)
Cute kids. Sad stories of stupidity.  A cheeseburger bed. Obama dancing and hitting cats with snowballs,
Clips from Friends, Ellen, The Soup, etc.
Laughtastic goodness.
All these can be yours by paging through the contest entries!

Below are the five things that really REALLY made me laugh -- though most every single entry brightened my day.

Elena for The Engineer's Guide to Cats

I put those names in a hat and came up with Nerissa and Dee. THE WINNERS!
So you two, please send me an email at elockhart @earthlink.net and tell me what book you want and your address.  Do NOT post this info on the internet! Also, if you are under 15, have your parent drop me an email before you give out any personal info and wait for me to write that parent back.

Thanks so much for all the entries.

Fly Has a New Look

Oooh, I love getting cover art.

Random House, my publisher, is giving Fly on the Wall a fresh look that's going to be on books starting this summer.  Here it is!  There will be new flap copy, too, which I'm getting to work on.

In other news, I am going to finish reading all the contest entries over the weekend and will pick two winners!  Thanks so so much for all the laughs. :)

Movies with damaged girls and devoted boys

For Roo4, help me out. I need to continue this list:
Movies where a quality  guy loves a girl and sticks with her even though she's one or another kind of crazy --  maybe alcoholic, maybe addict, maybe psychotic or depressed: Mad Love, When a Man Loves a Woman, Crazy/Beautiful....

(by the way, the comments on the last post are amazing!  I am laughing all over the place and haven't even had time to finish going through them! Winners announced a day or two after Valentine's Day, so there's still time to enter.)
