Character Meme
March 23, 2007
The Journal of Becs (thanks for the link, Justine Larbalestier!) posts a Meme Girls meme which puts all her fave YA characters together. Click here to see who Ruby Oliver's secret twin is -- and whether Cal from Peeps could take Reason Cansino from the Magic of Reason trilogy.
Meme Girls turns out, on further investigation, to be Jennifer Lynn Barnes (Golden) and Robyn Schneider (Better than Yesterday).
So here's my version of the CHARACTER MEME! What's yours?
Write down the first ten book characters who come to mind. Try not to use more than one character from any one book.
(Note: this was quite interesting to do! to see what a motley assortment of characters came to the forefront of my brain.)
1. Bertie Wooster, man about town, from the stories of PG Wodehouse
2. Jane Eyre, governess from C. Bronte's novel of that title
3. Fagin, thief, from Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens
4. Amelia Bedelia, literalist and housekeeper, from the books by Peggy Parrish
5. Trixie, rabbit keeper and toddler, from Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems
6. Beige, internal punk, from the novel of that title by Cecil Castelluci
7. Macbeth, pretender to the throne, from the Shakespeare play of that title
8. Owen Meany, agent of God, from A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving
9. Mrs. Bennettt, flibbertigibbet, from Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
10. Bridget Jones, optimist and television reporter, from the books by Helen Fielding
Now answer the following questions, based on the characters you wrote down above. Absolutely no going back to change the characters you've chosen!
Characters 4 through 10 are on Survivor. Who gets voted off the island first?
Poor Mrs. Bennett. Viewers find her too irritating.
Later, the show gets quite surreal, with Beige trying on Bridget's Wonderbra and Trixie sitting in Macbeth's lap, despite his protestations.
What are the chances of characters 1 and 8 falling in love with each other?
They are each, in their own ways, good time boys. Owen Meany and Bertie Wooster like to drink and get into scrapes of various sorts. I actually think they'd get along quite well, though it would be a platonic sort of love.
Character 2 and character 3 get into a cat fight. Who wins and why?
Fagin beats Jane Eyre because he fights unfair. But Jane does her best.
Of the other nine characters, who is character 7 most likely to have a crush on?
Macbeth – I'll have to go with Beige. Macbeth would find her cute think he could boss her (and after Lady M he's looking for a milktoast companion) – but he'd be sorry once they got together, because she's not as beige as her name.
What would happen if character 4 got turned into a vampire?
Amelia Bedelia.
Hee hee hee hee heeee
is all I can say.
Two of the characters are twins separated at birth. Which two are they?
Trixie and Bridget Jones
Characters 1, 2, 3, and 9 are stuck in an elevator. What do they do to pass the time?
Fagin, Jane Eyre, Bertie Wooster and Mrs. Bennett.
Mrs. Bennett tries to get Bertie engaged to one of her daughters. When that doesn't work, she tries to get him engaged to Jane, who's got spinster written all over her.
Fagin picks Bertie's pocket.
What would happen if character 8 and character 5 were roommates?
Owen Meany and Trixie.
I think they would get up to quite a lot of trouble, I'll say that.
What do character 10 and character 6 have in common?
Bridget Jones and Beige.
Both are boycrazy. Though Beige doesn't really admit it.
Both are writers.
