My ambition realized

At the start of the new year, I formed a new ambition. I formed it quickly, and on impulse. I wanted to appear on Brotherhood 2.0, fabulous writer John Green's year of video blogging with his snacky eco-geek brother Hank.

Every week day of this year, the two engage in public video blogging. John one day, Hank another. It is extremely amusing. I wanted to be on.

I have, to my surprise, realized this ambition in less time than it has taken me to realize any other ambition I have pretty much ever had. It'll be up on Tuesday. So I am told.

My Deadly Sin

Robin Wasserman, author of the Seven Deadly Sins Series, made a quiz. I am sloth!
(I am not surprised)

This quiz was VERY fun to take.

What's your deadly sin? -- from the author of the Seven Deadly Sins series!

SLOTHWho says life has to be such hard work? Caring is for suckers and trying is overrated. Let the rest of the world work for what they want. You're happy to just lay back and watch the scenery roll by.
Take this quiz!

Robin herself declines to say what sin she is -- but on her blog, she says making up the quiz was extremely fun. I agree -- I made one myself, a while ago.

Melissa Senate takes the fly survey

Loveyoutodeath_1Melissa Senate wrote The Breakup Club -- which got her to write this eye-rolling list of the worst things her ex-boyfriends ever said to her, last time she visited this blog.

She also wrote the fun YA novel about Hollywood, THEODORA TWIST, and her new book, LOVE YOU TO DEATH, is about a woman who realizes a killer is bumping off all her ex-boyfriends.

Funny, romantic, and scary, too! What more can you want?

Oh! A Fly on the Wall Survey!
questions by me, because Gretchen in Fly on the Wall is obsessed with superheroes,
answers by Melissa Senate

1) If you could be a fly on the wall somewhere, anywhere – where?
A: I think it would be fun to buzz around a few celebrities’ houses for an hour or so. What do Brad and Angelina talk about? Is Britney the mess she appears to be? Does Donald Trump screech about Rosie to Melania all night long?

2) If you could have one superpower, what?
A: To give myself patience

3) What is your superhero name? Why?
A: The Amazing Single Mom (self-explanatory!)

4) Who is your favorite superhero?
A: Spidey

5) Favorite non-super hero?
A: Jon Stewart

6) Recommend us a superhero movie.
A: Love the movie “Sky High”!

7) If you could turn in to any animal, what? Why?
A: I wouldn’t mind being a monkey and swinging from tree to tree, stopping to eat a banana

8) Do you (or have you ever) read comic books? What? When?
A: I lived for Archie comics as a kid.

21 Proms

21proms_1 I thought I posted this before but something happened and it never went up. Here's the jacket for 21 Proms! which is a collection I have a story in that comes out in May -- just in time for you know what.

Stories by me, David Levithan, John Green, Daniel Ehrenhaft, Holly Black, Cecily von Zegeisar, Libba Bray, Sarah Mlynowski, Brent Hartinger, Melissa de la Cruz, Ned Vizzini, Jacqueline Woodson -- and SO MANY MORE authors you want to read!

I am psyched.

Tyrell

TyrellI was so crazy with all my cookie-baking over the holiday season that I forgot to blog about Tyrell, by my YA author drinks night friend Coe Booth.

At first I was a little reluctant to read Tyrell because the subject matter seemed grim: it's about a teenage boy, his daddy in jail and his mom not working or functioning, who's trying to figure out how to get his family out of the messed-up shelter system and back into some kind of home. Meanwhile, he's dropped out of school and has girl-trouble, plus his little brother needs him.

But the thing that makes the subject-matter really involving is -- you love that guy. He's really funny. He's got a huge heart. He's angry and confused and yet he means well and the solutions he finds to his problems are creative and yet realistic. Coe writes really honestly about sex from a less-than-sensitive guy's perspective, and she really understands how humor can make an incredibly rotten situation bearable.

Tyrell made me cry -- and it's written with a lovely ear for slang and dialog, and it should have a lot of appeal for girls and boys alike. For any kid who takes too much responsibility for his or her family; for any kid trying to sort out love relationships or deal with a difficult parent.
I also think it's a book that some boys will want to read who have never wanted to read a book before. And that is saying a lot.
